“Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:” —2 Peter 2:14
We live in a pornographic world that is escalating predator behavior not only in men but women as well. Every day the news is filled with aggressive sexual behavior that has led to all sorts of deviancy.
Of all the epidemics in our society, the saddest of all is the immorality among young men raised in what we would consider good families. Inappropriate sexual behavior on the internet is one of the biggest complaints I hear from our circle of friends.
I hear stories of young men communicating inappropriately with young ladies; many times they do not even know them directly but have connected through social media because of their family’s reputation. While immoral behavior is not to be excused even among young men and women who are in a relationship, what is frightening is the immoral behavior young men are expressing to women and young ladies that many times are complete strangers.
We have escalated from natural sexual attraction between two people in love to the out of control lust of a predator. We are a nation of stalkers seeking their sexual prey. But the pornographic abyss is just not filled with back alley perverts but men who are highly regarded in the Church.
The internet has allowed men to hang out in the seedy part of town in the comfort of their own home. The anonymous nature of the internet with its lack of accountability and restraint of evil provide a safe haven for the darkest part of man’s heart.
This is not a tirade against the World Wide Web but a warning to those who think that secret suppression of the truth does not have the same consequences as those who hang out in brothels, adult stores or strip clubs.
While the internet can be used as a force of good it can also be used for the most deviant evil man can imagine. Technology is a good thing when it is accountable and evil is restrained. However, libertarian freedom is a very dangerous heresy.
There has been a push over the last several decades for libertarian choice. When we confront this false philosophy with the need to restrain evil the response is always the same—you don’t trust us. Darn straight!
Man has proven for 6,000 years he cannot be trusted. Add anonymity to the equation and it gets worse. Scandal after scandal ought to provide all the evidence we need of this reality.
We had better wake up to the two foundational doctrines of Christianity: (1) God is sovereign; (2) Man is depraved. If we do not we are going to lose all control of the Church just as we have lost all control of society.
Refusal to acknowledge the sovereignty of God leads to suppression of the truth. The first truth that is suppressed is the depravity of man. Man will justify the wickedness of his heart claiming that good is evil and evil is good. Even in our sin we refuse to admit our depravity and attempt to uphold our filthy rags as righteousness.
This is a dark place to be because when truth is suppressed evil escalates until we are given over to our uncleanness, vile affections and finally reprobation (Romans 1).
Young man, beware of the deceitfulness of your heart. You cannot control sin. It has been said in the past and is still true today, “Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay and cost you more than you want to pay.”
If you play around with pornography it will warp your mind and turn you into a beast. There is no escape in the devil’s playground. Pornography causes insane thoughts and actions with addictions you cannot control. It programs you into a satanic zombie that loses all regard for life, reality and goodness.
Do not be deceived. God will not be mocked. If you implant this disease into your mind it will not stop growing until it has completely consumed you. What you sow is what you will reap.
Jesus Christ is the only way to return to sanity. Seek His mercy for it is only by His grace you can be raised from death to life. Rituals, self-reformation or doing good works is not going to save you. The Spirit of God must be imparted to you through the blood of Jesus Christ.
When this happens the flesh must be mortified through sanctification and learning to walk in the Spirit. Your mind must be renewed through the Word of God by the power of the Holy Spirit. This involves accountability, forgiveness, restoration and the restraint of sin. Only after the working of all these things can you be built up in Christ to overcome the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” —Romans 8:1-14
May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant unto you pardon and remission of all your sins, time for amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
