The Word Made Flesh – Part 63: Contextual Considerations for John 6

In this sermon from our series, "The Word Made Flesh: Exploring the Life and Light of Christ in the Gospel of John", we begin John 6 by considering the context surrounding the feeding of the five thousand. As great multitudes follow Jesus because of the signs He performed, we are reminded that true faith does not demand signs in unbelief, but receives the signs God gives as witnesses to Christ and His saving work.

This message explores the difference between sinful sign-seeking and faithful reception of God-given signs, showing how the works of Christ reveal His glory and call us to believe in Him. It also considers Christ’s pattern of ministry leadership as He withdraws with His disciples, forming them for the work of the kingdom while the crowds rise and fall in their excitement.

John 6 confronts us with an important question: will we follow Christ merely for the excitement of the moment, or will we receive Him as the true Prophet, the Bread of Life, and the One sent by the Father?
