In this sermon from our series, The Word Made Flesh: Exploring the Life and Light of Christ in the Gospel of John, we continue considering the feeding of the five thousand in John 6:4–14. The central comfort of this passage is found in the words, “He Himself knew what He would do.” Philip saw the impossibility of the need, and Andrew saw the weakness of the available means: five barley loaves and two small fish. But Christ knew what He would do.

This sign teaches us that Jesus is not merely a provider of earthly bread, but the true Prophet, the greater Moses, the Shepherd of Israel, and the Bread of Life. He takes what is small, weak, and insufficient, places it under His blessing, and makes it more than enough. The multitude is fed, the disciples are trained, and twelve baskets remain as a testimony to the abundance of Christ.

The sermon also reminds us that faith does not deny reality. The multitude was real, the hunger was real, and the insufficiency was real. But faith sees Christ. In our homes, our church, and our labors for the kingdom, we must not despise the day of small things. In our hands, the loaves and fish are not enough. But in the hands of Christ, they become His appointed means.

Christ knows how to feed His people, build His Church, test His disciples, strengthen faith, and preserve all that belongs to Him. Therefore, we are called to bring our weakness, our households, our prayers, our obedience, and our five barley loaves and two small fish to Christ, trusting not in the greatness of our resources, but in the sufficiency of the Savior.
