WHAT IS SALVATION?
Holy Trinity Reformed Church teaches salvation is understood as the work of God by which He rescues sinners from the power and penalty of sin and reconciles them to Himself. This salvation is accomplished through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and is offered freely to all who repent of their sins and trust in Him.
To be saved means to be rescued from the condemnation and wrath of God and to be reconciled to Him in a loving and obedient relationship. This salvation is not something that we can earn or achieve through our own efforts, but it is a gift of God's grace that is received by faith alone. Salvation is a comprehensive work of God that encompasses the entire process of redemption, from election and calling to justification, sanctification, and glorification. It is not just a one-time event, but a lifelong journey of growth and transformation as we become more and more like Christ. |
We are saved by faith alone in Christ alone. This means that we must repent of our sins and trust in the finished work of Christ on the cross for our salvation. We cannot earn or merit our salvation through good works or religious rituals, but it is a free gift that is offered to us by God's grace.
At the heart of salvation is the doctrine of justification by faith alone. This means that we are declared righteous before God not by our own works or merit, but by the imputed righteousness of Christ. Our sins are forgiven, and we are reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ.
But faith is not a mere intellectual assent to certain truths about God. True saving faith is a gift of God that involves a heartfelt trust and commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It involves turning away from sin and self-reliance and turning toward Christ in humble surrender and obedience.
While salvation is a work of God, there are things that we must do in response to God's grace. We must repent of our sins, turn to Christ in faith, and obey His commands. We must persevere in faith and obedience, trusting in God's grace and power to sustain us and transform us more and more into the likeness of Christ.
Holy Trinity Reformed Church teaches that salvation is based on the following biblical teachings:
• The Bible teaches that all people are sinners and are under the condemnation of God (Romans 3:23).
• The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins (Romans 5:8).
• The Bible teaches that salvation is a gift from God that is received by faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9).
• The Bible teaches that salvation results in eternal life with God (John 3:16).

Becoming a Christian involves acknowledging your need for a Savior, believing in Jesus Christ as that Savior, and following Him as Lord. Here are some steps you can take to become a Christian:
- Recognize your need for a Savior: The Bible teaches that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). This means that we are separated from God by our sin and cannot save ourselves.
- Believe in Jesus Christ: God commended His love to us, even when we were yet sinners, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins and rise again on the third day. By trusting in Jesus' sacrifice, we can receive forgiveness and eternal life. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
- Repent of your sins: Repentance means turning away from your sins and turning towards God. Acts 3:19 says, "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord."
- Confess your faith in Jesus Christ: Romans 10:9 says, "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
- Follow Jesus as Lord: Following Jesus means surrendering your life to Him and living in obedience to His Word. Jesus said in Luke 9:23, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me."
