WHEREAS, the Elders of Reformed Church of the Holy Trinity have requested a day of public humiliation, prayer, and fasting, to be observed by the members of Reformed Church of the Holy Trinity with religious earnestness, and the offering of fervent supplications to Almighty God for the safety, welfare, and blessings upon these United States, the state of Indiana, Evangel Presbytery, and our particular church body; and
WHEREAS, the duty which God requires of man is obedience to his revealed will, both natural and revealed; and
WHEREAS, the moral law is the declaration of the will of God to mankind, directing and binding everyone to personal, perfect, and perpetual conformity and obedience thereunto, in the frame and disposition of the whole man, soul, and body, and in performance of all those duties of holiness and righteousness which he owes to God and man: promising life upon the fulfilling, and threatening death upon the breach of it; and
WHEREAS, since the fall, no man can attain to righteousness and life by the moral law; yet there is great use thereof, as well common to all men, as peculiar either to the unregenerate, or the regenerate; and
WHEREAS, the moral law is of use to all men, to inform them of the holy nature and will of God, and of their duty, binding them to walk accordingly; to convince them of their disability to keep it, and of the sinful pollution of their nature, hearts, and lives; to humble them in the sense of their sin and misery, and thereby help them to a clearer sight of the need they have of Christ, and of the perfection of his obedience; and
WHEREAS, the rule which God at first revealed to man for his obedience was the moral law; and
WHEREAS, the sum of the ten commandments is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind; and to love our neighbor as ourselves; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not knowing and acknowledging God to be the only true God, and our God; and to worship and glorify him accordingly; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in denying, or not worshiping and glorifying, the true God as God, and our God; and the giving of that worship and glory to any other, which is due to him alone; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not receiving, observing, and keeping pure and entire, all such religious worship and ordinances as God hath appointed in his Word; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in the worshiping of God by images, or any other way not appointed in his Word; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not being holy and reverent in the use of God’s names, titles, attributes, ordinances, Word, and works; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in the profaning and abusing the ways God has made Himself known; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not keeping holy to God such set times as he hath appointed in his Word; expressly one whole day in seven, to be a holy sabbath to himself; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in the omission, or careless performance, of the duties required, and the profaning of the Sabbath day by unnecessary employments, worldly amusements, and neglecting corporate worship; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not preserving the honor, and performing the duties, belonging to everyone in their several places and relations, as superiors, inferiors, or equals; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in the neglecting of or doing anything against, the honor and duty which belongs to everyone in their several places and relations; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not performing all lawful endeavors to preserve our own life and the life of others; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in the taking away of our own life, or the life of our neighbor, unjustly, or whatsoever tends thereunto; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not preserving our own and our neighbor’s chastity, in heart, speech, and behavior; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in all unchaste thoughts, words, and actions; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not lawfully procuring and furthering the wealth and outward estate of ourselves and others; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in whatsoever does, or may, unjustly hinder our own, or our neighbor’s wealth or outward estate; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not maintaining and promoting truth between man and man, and of our own and our neighbor’s good name, especially in bearing witness; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in whatsoever is prejudicial to truth, or injurious to our own, or our neighbor’s, good name; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned by not living in full contentment with our condition, with a right and charitable frame of spirit toward our neighbor, and all that is his; and
WHEREAS, we have sinned in being discontentment with our estate, envying or grieving at the good of our neighbor, and all inordinate motions and affections to anything that is his; and
WHEREAS, the safety and prosperity of nations ultimately and essentially depend on the protection and blessing of Almighty God; and the national, ecclesiastical, and familial acknowledgment of this truth is not only an indispensable duty which the people owe to Him, but a duty whose natural influence is favorable to the promotion of that morality and piety, without which social happiness cannot exist, nor the blessings of a free government be enjoyed; and as this duty, at all times incumbent, is so especially in seasons of difficulty and of danger, when existing or threatening calamities, the just judgments of God against prevalent iniquity are a loud call to repentance and reformation; and as the United States of America are at present placed in a hazardous and afflictive situation, it has appeared to us that the duty of imploring the mercy and benediction of Heaven on our country and on our church, demands at this time a special attention to humble ourselves under the almighty hand of God with each household offering their devout addresses to the Father of Mercies with the deepest humility and acknowledge before God the manifold sins and transgressions with which we are justly chargeable as individuals, as families, as a Church and as a nation; beseeching him, at the same time, of his infinite grace, through the Redeemer of the world, freely to remit all our offenses, and to incline us, by his Holy Spirit, to that sincere repentance and reformation which may afford us reason to hope for his inestimable favor and heavenly benediction; that it be made the subject of particular and earnest supplication, that our country may be protected from all the dangers which threaten it; that our civil and religious privileges may be preserved inviolate, and perpetuated to the latest generations; that our public councils and magistrates may be especially enlightened and directed at this critical period; that the American people may be united in those bonds of amity and mutual confidence, and inspired with that vigor and fortitude by which they have in times past been so highly distinguished, and by which they have obtained such invaluable advantages; that the health of the inhabitants of our land may be preserved, and their agriculture, commerce, fisheries, arts and manufactures be blessed and prospered; that the principles of genuine piety and sound morality may influence the minds and govern the lives of every description of our citizens; and that the blessings of peace, freedom, and pure religion, may be speedily extended to all the nations of the earth; and
NOW, THEREFORE, the Elders of Reformed Church of the Holy Trinity, do appoint March 29th, 2020, as a day of humiliation, prayer and fasting to be kept with all humility and religious earnestness, to the end that the united prayer of our church may ascend to the Throne of Grace and bring down plentiful blessings upon our country.
